Johan Gøtzsche-Astrup

I am a postdoctoral fellow at Yale's Center for Cultural Sociology where I examine the role of activism, protests, and riots in liberal democracies. I am also an incoming assistant professor in Political Sociology at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University.

My current work, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, revolves around the democratic character of the activist. I study how activists may exercise democratic power, speak the truth, and construct ethical relations in conflicts. My research draws on classical and modern social theory, political theory, and cultural sociology. You can read more about my project here.

I have previously studied how the boundary between meaningful political protests and riots was constructed historically and is configured today. I have also conducted several survey and interview studies of how the US and UK public understand and evaluate different protest tactics.

I hold a PhD in Political Science from Aarhus University, an MSc in Political Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MSc in Political Science from Aarhus University.
