Johan Gøtzsche-Astrup
I am an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Aarhus University where I examine the role of activism, protests, and riots in liberal democracies from a political and cultural sociological perspective.
My current work, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, asks how critique is ascribed meaning within liberal democracies. Here, I focus on how activists and journalists exercise democratic power and speak the truth. My research draws on classical and modern social theory, political theory, and cultural sociology.
I have previously studied how the boundary between meaningful political protests and riots was constructed historically and is configured today. I have also conducted several survey and interview studies of how the US and UK public understand and evaluate different protest tactics.
I have previously worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University. I hold a PhD in Political Science from Aarhus University, an MSc in Political Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MSc in Political Science from Aarhus University.
